The presence of key metabolites such as threonate has been shown to be responsible for this increased level and retention of Vitamin C by the cells.Research by DM Bailey in 2001 on mice shows that a Vitamin C supplementation may affect physiological responses to hypoxia and therefore be beneficial at altitude. In 2005 Mansoor JK et al also did a double-blind trial of 18 mountaineers climbing to the Mt. Everest base camp. Research found that use of an antioxidant vitamin supplement (providing 1,000 mg of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E, and 600 mg of lipoic acid daily) significantly improved symptoms of altitude sickness as compared to placebo.
